It’s one thing to own a camera and its another to know how to properly use it. Getting started in photography means understanding the exposure triangle (click here to read our breakdown of the exposure triangle) and when that’s done, it’s time to shift your camera mode dial from auto to the big M (manual).
Shooting in manual has tremendous benefits. Not only can you control the exact measure of your exposure, but it also opens you to the possibility of in-camera effects and that extra stretch of control that’s lacking when you shoot auto ( or all the other modes).
Shooting manual avails you the control to shoot long exposures, first/rear curtain sync images, high-speed sync (HSS), control the amount of Bokeh via the aperture, etc.
Below is a video by Hyun Ralph Jeong explaining in the most basic of terms ideals that can help beginner photographers transition from auto and start shooting in manual mode.
